The official date of foundation is considered to be 1 January 1950, when the British announced the establishment of the British Section of the International Police Association. National Section of Ukraine was officially recognized as a member of the IPA 6 June 1997, when the city of Quebec (Canada) was held on 15 World Congress of the International Police Association.

Now it is the largest organization of police and civilian police officers, consisting of more than three hundred thousand members in 64 countries. The NGO with the Economic and Social Council of the UN and Council of Europe. The only professional organization of police, regardless of position, duty station, the language of communication, race, religion, ideologies. Regardless of political and trade union bodies and is not included in any other groups and associations. Open to the police of any state, not hindering its police unlimited contacts with the police forces of other states and the free exchange of professional experience.
